Catching Up with Juliet and Pauline
012: Heavenly Creatures
The stars of Heavenly Creatures were two troubled souls. The act they performed in the movie made the "based on real events" tag much more intriguing. Like so many other people who see movies based on reality, I looked up Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker.
The first thing I found was that Juliet is now Anne Perry, a famous novelist. According to Wikipedia, "After serving several years in prison in New Zealand, Juliet was released. She returned to England, where she became a flight attendant. She eventually settled in the United States, where she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She later settled in Scotland." Way to make a life for yourself.
Pauline Parker became Hilary Nathan, and runs a children's riding school. That website, whatever it is, explained, "Pauline Parker is now running a children's riding school at Hoo, near Rochester, Kent, under the name of Hilary Nathan. She studied at Auckland University, graduating with a BA before training as a librarian and moving to Britain in 1965. She settled in Kent, retrained as a teacher, and taught mentally handicapped children at Abbey Court special school in Strood until her retirement three years ago, by which time she had become deputy headmistress."
Thank you internet, for updating us on these girls' lives. Another interesting tidbit is that Kate Winslet is now a famous actor. Honest!

apparently, according to dana's sleuthing, the only book ever written about this story is categorized under the Gay/Lesbian section. and according to Anne Perry, they made a much bigger deal about it than ever existed. they had a strange, intense friendship, but it was never homosexual.
or so says the murder mystery author.
