11 pm → 2006: Where I Traveled
Another year, another list of cities I visited. I was bit more thorough this year (asterisks stand for multiple visits):
New York, NY*
Riverwoods, IL*
Chicago, IL*
Gunisao Lake, Manitoba, CA
Palm Desert, CA
West Dover, VT
Cherry Hill, NJ*
Philadelphia, PA*
Hoboken, NJ
Los Angeles, CA
Binghampton, NY

11 pm → Hello There, Serious Eats
You've know for a while that I've been writing for A Hamburger Today and you've known for a week that I've got a new job and know you'll know about the fantastic coincidence that joins these together.
Today marks the official launch of Serious Eats, a site implemented by all of us at Apperceptive. What's nutty about it is that Adam, my burger-lover in arms at AHT, is the managing editor. Yep, we both ended up with new jobs that let us work on food blogs for money (more him than me, though).
Coincidence aside, Serious Eats is looking sharp. It's backed by tons of awesome people (Ed Levine, Meg Hourihan and Alaina Browne to name a few) and has the makings of a great community. I'm always overwhelmed by Chowhound and put off by the pomposity of eGullet's members, so I'm ready for Serious Eats to provide all the answers I need.

While I don't talk about my professional life on Capn Design very much (at least not anymore), I figured this was worth mentioning. I'm currently in the third week of a new job. I've left Jewish National Fund (amicably, of course) and moved on to a small web development shop by the name of Apperceptive. The majority of our business is in the blog world and that makes me very happy.
I've got more to say about the move, but I've decided to relegate my personal blogging to my vox blog. In fact, this will likely be a friends only post. So, if you're dying to read it, you better sign up for vox.

Summer break! Well, I didn't exactly plan to have a summer break, but it appears I had one. To get the ball rolling again, here's some highlights from the last month:
- Just after I left you, I made my way up north to Lake Gunisao. Man, it was breathtaking up there. If the flies weren't so annoying, I could spend a month there just staring out at the lake. I put together a photoset of the best snaps I got on the trip.
- Although I've missed a few games, my kickball skills have vastly improved and the Bacon Bits are doing well. I've kicked 2 home runs in the last 3 games.
- I made my first trip to the new Fairway in Red Hook and it's awesome. If I had a car I'd go every week, but at least the B61 drops you off right in front.
- I finally bought an Airport Express to fulfill my dream of synchronized music in the apartment and on the roof. It made my recent rooftop BBQ a success for nerds everywhere.
- Two weekends ago I made my first trip to Montauk. Although people may consider it part of the Hamptons, it is infinitely better. Aside from having nice beaches there are nice people, which is a rarity in the fancy Hamptons. I'm a little upset I missed John's Drive-In though, as they supposedly have the best ice cream in town and a tasty burger on the menu. This was my only grievance though, as the four days I spent there was not nearly enough.
- Work has been terribly busy due to the war in the Middle East. Politics aside, I'm proud of what we're doing for Israelis. We've already raised $1.5 million with our current campaign that is sending kids affected by the war to summer camp, building security roads in Northern Israel and providing emergency equipment for fire fighters. I'm happy we're able to protect some civilians from this chaos.
- On Friday, Jori and I went to Applewood to celebrate her birthday. Oh my lord was it delicious. It was one of the top five meals I've had in New York City. I'll have photos and a better run down when my camera decides I can download my photos to my computer.
- Monday and Tuesday I witnessed the Cubs beat up on the Mets at Shea. If only I had gone today, then maybe they would have pulled out the sweep. Over the two day stint I managed to eat two feet of hot dog.
- The Movie Binge is humming along nicely as we're nearly halfway through the movies. This week we had two scathing reviews: Lady in the Water and Little Man. You can expect a review of the depressingly crappy film Clerks II sometime tomorrow.
That's a pretty solid recap of my last 30 days. My only complaint is missing Pub Quiz two times in a row (and I have to mix it next time). Boo! Posted in My Life | Comments (0) | TB (0) |
12 pm → Lake Gunisao
I'm on a plane about to leave for Gunisao Lake, which is 275 miles North of Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. While trying to figure out the weather for the trip I looked at Google Earth to figure out what cities were nearby. There aren't any. Below are some shots of the area so you can see exactly how far out it is.
As you might guess, I'll have no access to cell service or the internet there, which should be a nice break. See you in a week.

Tomorrow morning, around 11:30am, I'll be interviewed on the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC for The Movie Binge. It's my first radio interview (for this or anything), so I'm a little excited.
You can listen along at their website or download the podcast after it's all finished.
Update (5/27/06): I managed to get an mp3 of the interview if you'd like to hear it. You can also listen to the entire show at WNYC.org if you're interested.
Posted in My Life | Comments (3) | TB (0) |10 am → The Movie Binge
Today the Movie Binge is live. I was a cryptic before, but now I can tell you that me and a few fellow movie lovers will be seeing every commercially released film from Memorial Day to Labor Day and we'll blog about it the whole way. Along the way we'll give you reviews, previews and an update of how much popcorn, candy and soda we've consumed. It's going to be a nutty ride.
If you'd rather get your reviews elsewhere, so be it, but something that has already proven useful for me is our our list of films for the summer. I'm also working on an .ics calendar file you can subscribe to via Google Calendar, iCal, 30boxes or whatever.
I'm pumped. This should be a lot of fun.
Posted in My Life | Comments (1) | TB (0) |7 pm → My Jack Spade Bag
I believe everyone should buy themselves a good birthday present. You know yourself better than anyone else, so you should at least get one thing you're going to love. This year, I bought myself a Jack Spade bag. I've seen them around the subway and admired their simple, clean lines, but alway thought they were just a little too expensive/metrosexual. Then I saw one in the flesh (Jen got James one) and there was no turning back.
The bag is built beautifully and the attention to detail is exquisite. My favorite parts are the two outer pockets, which are clearly sized for an iPod and a set of keys (the larger pocket has an exit for your headphones), and the magazine slot in the back. I often find myself nearly missing my subway stop because I'm engrossed in an article and having to fumble with my bag to get the magazine inside, but this clears that up. As a bonus, one of the three small pockets on the inside fits my PSP perfectly (unfortunately my DS is a smidgen to large, which is why I'll obviously have to get a DS Lite).
Looking at the bag on the macro level, it's ideal for my commute to work. It can fit 2-3 magazines, all the items listed above and a lunch without much problem. Even better is that it easily fits in my lap, which was often a difficulty with my Chrome bag.
If you want to check out the details for yourself, I put together a flickr set with a few detail shots. I just wish more purveyors of goods took a ton of shots like this for each product, because the internet age is not great for kicking the tires.

At the day job, we've decided to hire someone full-time to work with me on the website. If you're interested, send a cover letter and resume to our HR department. Be sure to include links or samples of your work and the title in the subject line. Below is the official job description.
Web Production Assistant
This position will be responsible for assisting with the maintenance of existing and to-be-developed programs on the JNF Website; working with content management system and helping incorporate the latest web delivery tools and technology; working with standards-compliant XHTML, CSS, Flash, Photoshop and other relevant technologies.

Update: My boss mentioned the most important perk: you get to work with me. I am awesome and I only require twice-a-day coffee runs. I take 8 sugars.
Posted in My Life | |4 pm → I Turned 85 Overnight
Last week, I started having some weird pains in my upper leg / butt region. I initially thought it was a pulled muscle, but my doctor confirmed that I have sciatica, or as I like to call it, old-guy-itis. Simply put, sciatica occurs when your sciatic nerve is irritated by something, anything in your body. This blows because your sciatic nerve goes from your butt all the way down to your toes.
It's a mild case and the doc gave me some anti-inflamatories, so I'll make it to see another day, but sciatica just sounds old. It makes me think I should get some elastic pants, velcro shoes and a 5 lb. bucket of prunes.* Okay, I'm taking it too far, but I do wonder how much my mostly sedentary life is to blame. I think it's time to get the body moving on a regular basis.
My favorite current diagnosis is pregnancy sympathy pains, or Couvade Syndrome. No, I have not impregnated anyone personally, but my coworker is prego. And since I am a baby-freak by male standards, a few in the office believe that to be the cause. I won't confirm or deny this rumor, but I will tell you this — I am dying for a pickle, peanut butter and anchovy sandwich.
* When is old-man chic going to hit the hipster set?
Posted in My Life | Comments (1) | TB (0) |10 am → Things I Hope to Buy By Year's End
1. A 100 GB iPod (maybe this is it?)
2. A Series 3 Tivo
3. A 2nd generation Intel iBook
1 pm → Help Me Read Good
Okay, so I can't decide what I should read. I've been reading a lot of non-fiction lately and I need a break. I need some good fiction. Please post any recommendations you have in the comments.
For a little reference, I've been digging Jonathan Ames and Jonathan Lethem lately. That being said, feel free to recommend books by authors with first names other than Jonathan.
Posted in My Life | Comments (2) | |1 pm → Resolution #1: Cook at Least Once a Week
The only conventional resolution I made this year was to cook more. It's healthier, it's cheaper and it's usually tastier. Since "more" is a little too amorphous for me, I decided I would cook at least once a week.
Cooking doesn't just mean microwaving a Lean Cuisine; I have to actually create a dish. In Week 1, I gave into my sister's praises and made Rachel Ray's Spanikopita Burgers. They were excellent. The spinach kept the burgers juicy, which is hard to do with a turkey burger.
Last week Jori and I had some people over for a dinner party, which meant serious cooking. Our menu was lime and honey glazed salmon on a warm bean and corn salad from Rachel Ray 365 (good recipes, annoying girl), asparagus and goat cheese quesadillas, red-skinned mashed potatoes and baked apples by Alton Brown, my favorite. The entire meal was fantastic and we managed to get everything out on time and hot. I was happy.
I haven't decided what to cook this week, but I'll certainly keep you posted and will start talking some photos.
In honor of my newfound dedication, I decided to splurge on some new cookware. I was going to just get a nice saute pan, but I found an amazing deal on Amazon for a 10-piece set of Calphalon One cookware. The entire set, with an extra 12 qt. stock pot and a 6" cleaver, was $375 with shipping. The deal has expired, but I couldn't pass it up. It's scheduled to arrive on Saturday (Fedex Ground does Saturday deliveries?) and I'm eager to get cooking.
Update (1/23/06): My pans have arrived!

8 pm → 2006: Not Great So Far
On Friday, I had to make a surprise visit home. My grandma had been afflicted with lung cancer for months and things were looking bad. Then, yesterday, she passed away beside my dad and his two brothers. I'm certainly upset about it, but having five months to think about this day has made it easier. Also, I think it will be much more difficult as the holidays start arriving. Passover will never be the same.
What's worse, is my great uncle, who was diagnosed with cancer the same week as my grandma, passed away last Wednesday. I wasn't nearly as close with him, but I feel bad as he definitely suffered more. Mostly, I feel bad for my dad and grandpa. He lost his twin brother and ex-wife (or uncle and mother) in the same week.
My grandma lived life on her own terms and was darn smart. More importantly, she cared incredibly deeply about her family and friends, which is what I'll miss most. Thankfully, she passed down her selflessness in my dad and I'd like to think I've picked some of it up myself. Thanks gramma. I love you and I'll miss you.
Hopefully this means I've gotten all the rough stuff out of the way and the rest of 2006 will be great. I'll keep you posted.
Posted in My Life | Comments (2) | |3 pm → Happy Turkey
I'd like to wish everyone a great Turkey Day. It's by far my favorite holiday because it usually gets the whole family together and it involves delicious, delicous food. Honestly, is there a better meal? I think it's just the right mix of textures. The soft, melt-in-your-mouth sweet potatoes, the juicy, tender turkey, the sweet sensation of cranberries popping in your mouth; it's all so good.
My favorite is easily the cranberries. Since I was little I was eating cranberries, but it used to be only Ocean Spray's Jellied Cranberry Sauce. I pretty much only ate that and hot dogs for 3 years straight. Odd, I know.
My deep love for those perfect, crimson fruits is the reason I became disappointed in Americans after reading this Gallop Poll.* Apparently, only 2% of American say cranberries are their favorite and 21% say it's their least favorite. Unbelievable. I now understand that this country hasn't gone to crap because of our president, but because we can't recognize culinary perfection.
Anywho, enjoy your meal, regardless of your favorite dish.
* Thanks for the tip, Gothamist.
Posted in My Life | Comments (2) | |4 pm → Favor: Have an Extra Powerbook Battery?
I have a request. I'm leaving for two weeks on Saturday and I'm going to be on the plane for a long time, as you can see in my previous post. Here's where you come in. Do you have an extra battery for your 15" Titanium Powerbook you could part with for a couple weeks? I have a long-ass plan ride and would like to be able to do work for more than a couple hours.
If you can help, I'll be happy to take you out for an evening at Shake Shack. Thanks in advance.
Posted in My Life | Comments (0) | |4 pm → I'm Off to Hong Kong and Japan
In three days, I board a plane for Hong Kong. A week after that I'll be off to Tokyo. I cannot wait. My friend Robbie is doing a semester of law school in HK, so we'll hang out there for a week and then head off to Tokyo with a brief stint in Kyoto.
I'm planning to update as much as possible while there. I'll have internet in both places, so it shouldn't be too big a deal. Last year, after my trip to Europe, I planned to put together this special site, but of course that didn't happen. This year, I'll just be posting here. It'll be good times.
Also, if you any recommendations for either place (food, shops, sights, whatever), I would happily take them. Keith was already nice enough to sit down and give me some tips for HK. Don't be surprised if I return with a suitcase full of pirated DVDs, cell phones and sneakers.
Posted in My Life | Comments (2) | |2 pm → My Trip to Seattle
In early June I went to Seattle and started writing a recap for the site. Unfortunately, I never finished. I just upgraded the site to MT 3.2 and was looking at entries when I found this one unpublished. So, I figured half an entry is better than no entry. Enjoy.
I've had a week to recover from my trip to Seattle, which means it's time to tell you about all the wonderful things I did. Here are the hits from the trip, broken down by day:
Saturday
We started with some delicious dim sum at Jade Garden in the International District. We rolled ourselves out and headed to Pike Place Market, where we bought some delicious bing cherries and had coffee at Le Panier. Next was a trip to Experience Music Project, which is everything you could imagine and more. Two and a half hours wasn't nearly enough time there. We finished the day with a trip to Two Bells Tavern, where I had a delicious burger (more on that later at AHT).
Sunday
After a leisurely morning, we made our first stop in Fremont at Jai Thai, a tasty little Thai restaurant. On the way to the Fremont Sunday Market, which was moderately entertaining, we stopped at a great record store, Sonic Boom Records. My best pick up was the Diamond Nights EP, which makes me smile. Our last stop in Fremont was Gas Works Park, which had breathtaking views of the Seattle skyline. Before heading home, we stopped at the flagship REI store, which was amazing. I got a cyclometer for my bike. In the evening, my uncle made us grilled salmon, a staple in the region apparently, and Jori made a delicious salad.
Monday
I only got that far. I stayed for Monday and Tuesday as well. The trip was amazing. The other highlights I can remember off the top of my head was a trip to Red Mill Burgers and Top Pot Doughnuts. Top Pot was stellar.
Posted in My Life | Comments (0) | |1 am → A Few Things of Note
1. I am back from my fishing trip. It was good times and so relaxing. Plus, free fish. Yummy.
2. I have one free pro flickr account to give away before the end of the day (Friday). First one to ask me gets it. Alas, we have a winner. Sorry I couldn't help everyone out.
3. I'll be at Siren Fest on Saturday, so keep an eye out for me if you'll be there. I'm excited for Diamond Nights and curious to see Dungen live.
4. I've been on a reading tear. I'll give proper reviews later, but in the last two weeks I read I Pass Like Night, Girl in Landscape, Killing Yourself to Live and Everything Bad is Good for You. Tomorrow night I shall pick up the new Harry Potter. You know you're jealous.
Posted in My Life | Comments (2) | |5 pm → Urgent: Join Me to See the Eels
So, Jori was going to join me to see the Eels tomorrow night, but she can't now. Does anyone want to come?
The tickets were $30 but I'll take whatever you're willing to contribute. It's at Webster Hall. It'll be fun. Shoot me an email or leave me a comment.
Update: You guys missed out. The show was awesome. Can you say four encores? No joke. The last one was done in pajamas.
Posted in My Life | Comments (0) | |1 am → I Miss Film
On Friday, I went to check out NYC Photobloggers 4 at the Apple Store. Aside from learning about a few really great photographers (Travis Ruse, Raul Gutierrez were my faves) and hearing from some old faves, I began to reminisce about my days with film. You just can't get the same colors and sharpness with digital and I'm longing for some beautiful prints.
That being said, I'm a little weary to go back, especially when I take a look at what Keith is bringing on a trip. That's a lot of film and I'm sure it wasn't cheap. Still, it'll hopefully remind about what it was like when I had to be frugal with my shots. Hopefully, it'll make me a little more focused.
Despite my fondness for film, I don't know that I'm ready to go back. It takes me long enough to get digital stuff online and that requires zero scanning. So, I'll probably find a special occasion and break out my Elan soon, but not quite yet.
Of course, if I ever take off on a summer road trip with no destination in mind, which is always a possiblity, I'm gonna get myself something in the medium format range. I love landscapes and I'll need more celluloid if I'm gonna capture that.
Posted in My Life | Comments (1) | |11 pm → Off to Seattle
In 8 hours, I'll be on a plane to Seattle. I haven't been back there for about four years, when my cousin had his Bar Mitzvah. Jori's never been before. To boot, I get two days off for the little-known Jewish holiday of Shavuot. All of this means a trip.
It'll be extra sweet as I bought the ticket on miles and I'm staying with my uncle, which means I'll probably spend as much there as I would have here. I'm excited and I hope to take a lot of photos.
But now, to bed. In the meantime, check out my photos from the Coral show last night. It was an awesome show.
Posted in My Life | Comments (0) | |9 am → It's a Good News/Bad News Morning
Good News: I rode my bike to work today and I got here in my fastest time: 45 minutes. I'm excited about that.
Bad News: I left my work clothes at home. Yeah. So I'm sitting at my desk in sweaty shorts and t-shirt. I'll be going to Gap in about 25 minutes.
Posted in My Life | Comments (0) | TB (0) |5 pm → Happy Birthday, Cinema Ahh*Some!
Earlier this month, the film group I co-founded with my friend Jen, Cinema Ahh*Some, celebrated it's first birthday. We watched 15 films in our first year. Although I had fun at all of them, my favorite was Shaolin Soccer. We had a blast. If you head to the site, you can see everything else we saw.
We haven't taken over the world yet and we only have 4-7 people per week, but it's been a great experience. I've seen movies I wouldn't have found otherwise and made a few good friends.
If you want to join us for our second year of fun, you're more than welcome. Leave a comment here or head to the Cinema Ahh*Some about page for specific info. Also, if you have any suggestions for films, leave a comment on this post.
