That's it. I've had it. Twice now, I've been a victim of sexism and I'm not gonna take it any more. Granted, the sexism has been relatively tame and has only been an annoyance, but it's time I shared my problem with the world.
For the second time in the last six months or so, I have been forced to check my bag. The first time, I was at a Yankees game and they told me I couldn't bring my bag into the stadium. I complained as I saw women carrying similarly sized bags through the gates with no problem. When I asked a security guard why I couldn't bring my bag in, he explained that purses are allowed but bags are not. I told him my bag was a purse and he asked if I was a woman. "If being a woman means I can bring my bag in, then yes, I am a woman." That didn't work.
Tonight I went to see the Stills at Irving Plaza with my friend/co-worker Elana. When I entered, the security guard told me I needed to check my bag. I told him that I didn't want to, but he didn't seem to care. I pointed out that Elana's bag was the exact same size as mine.
"Why can she bring her bag in but I cannot?"
"She's a girl. They have...personal issues."
"I have personal issues."
"No, I mean, they have monthly issues. They bleed."
"I bleed."
"Now this I want to see."
The man leveled with me and told me that he couldn't let me bring my bag in and it wasn't his rule. He was nice enough to have the coat check guy comp my bag. That was nice, but I was still miffed.
In this age of metrosexuality, why can't a man carry a murse (man purse) around with him? Is the fact that I lack the need or ability to menstruate enough to keep me from having my books, magazines and iPod at the ready? Clearly, I think not. It's time for equal bag rights. I want to keep my bag at my side and you don't need to know why. It's my man purse, God dammit, and you can't take it from me.
If this doesn't let up soon I am going to boycott institutions that don't allow murses. Myself and all the other downtrodden and afflicted shall take to the streets and from the depths of our bellies we shall chant our war cry, "We don't want to curse, now give me back my murse!"
Although I am being a bit melodramatic, I do think this is a very silly rule. I don't mind if ladies have their bags but I see no reason why I can't have mine.

he hee, "murse"
And here I was, thinking it was called a "man bag"

in high school (when metrosexuality didn't exist) i used to have a similar problem with wearing hats to school. it wasn't allowed, probably for gang-related reasons, but girls would often wear hats that were acceptable because it was "part of their outfit." i mean seriously dude WTF.

Amen, my brother, amen! I too have been the victim of man-bag discrimnation. It must stop now!
Why do they hate our manbags/ man purses / murses so much?

I get sick of it too, but there are worse things. If we fight it, we'll probably just make it so that women can't carry either. Maybe you can rethink this issue to wrangle the outcome to our side.

most all my man friends have murses. its a must in these days, esp in big cities when who knows when you'll be home, so you gotta bring all yer shit for the whole day. It is totally ridiculous to have to check a bag the same size as a womans. Need i remind you the size of a tampon is tiny compared to the size of the bag apparently 'absolutely necessary' to carry to contain the tampon?
Its also pretty sexist to say a woman needs a purse because she bleeds or needs to carry all her make up etc. Thats sorta bullshit too.

rock on!
i've always heard it referred to as a 'tote' though. kinda gender-neutral, unisex, whatever. i personally like 'man bag' ;)
here in alaska, most guys are still too 'macho' to carry a murse or a tote or whatever you'd wanna call it. Hey, that's why they've got carhart carpenter's jeans and big 4WD trucks, man. you might find it a little more common in anchorage, but that's it.

Throw a "feminine hygiene product" in the murse and next time security gives you problems, tell them you are a FTM transsexual finishing up your operation.

what miffs me is the mandatory bag check with the huge 'no liability assumed' sign. so, let me get this straight: i am forced to hand you my bag with the ipod inside, and you assume no liability if my ipod disappears? is this a mugging, or what?
last show with a mandatory coat check where i checked my bag, i got a funny look as i unpacked everything of value from my bag. the girl working the check said something like 'what, don't you trust me?'
my response? i pointed to their no-responsibility-for-stolen-items sign, and asked if she would trust me to hold her wallet if i offered the same conditions.
she laughed.
i said, 'exactly.'

I have been carrying a purse around since 1983 or 1984. I had an accident which prevented me from carrying my wallet in my back pocket unless I wanted backaches. I usually call it my purse or my bag.
The definition for purse in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is:
1 a (1) : a small bag for money
(2) : a receptacle (as a pocketbook) for carrying money and often other small objects
b : a receptacle (as a pouch) shaped like a purse
I haven't heard the term man purse until this year. I have never been teased by anybody about carring a purse. I have never been asked to check my purse when women could carry theirs, although, maybe I have never been to a place that doesn't allow any kind of bag but does allow purses.
Of course I have had several purses throughout the years trying to find the right one to fit my needs at that time. The one I have now is a little too small but it is the best I have found that meets my needs now.
In my purse I carry my wallet, checkbook, knife, three pens, change, calculator, small flashlight, extra keys, small magnifying glass, office building access card, palm pilot, small notebook, small screwdriver, compass, small tapemeasure, digital tape recorder, earbud for my cell phone, and glasses case.
My wife has a purse style that I like but all the designs were feminine. If there was one with a masculine design, I would have bought it. If I see another one like it I may buy it and just cover the design with one that I like.
I think if purse manufacturers start coming out with more masculine purses the trend will take off and more money will be made.

This really needs a solution. As long as you're not in a mainstream situation, a man carrying a bag is ignored. I mean, if I'm someplace and appear to be a tourist or 'outdoors' type, no one notices. But as other posters have said, in the 9-5 world it is not accepted. And thanks to the poster who listed the dictionary description - no sex involved.

my wife laughed at me when i said i was going to buy one. what the heck? she can have one but not me? now i carry my laptop bag that is a "man purse" just a bit bigger, and i keep everything in that - including my laptop. many guys - whether they will admit it or not, carry one, and i for one, have no problem with that.

I carry a bag, and I also carry a concealed weapon in it- Walther PPK, which is leagal in TN with a concealed weapons license.
I was under similar circumstances when entering BestBuy- Mr. Security asked me to take my bag to the customer service desk. When I asked why I could not carry mine but my GF could carry hers he replied the same- "they have female issues". He insisted I leave it. So I pulled my gun to unload it and drop the clip and asked if he was comfortable holding "this" for me.
His jaw dropped.
I explained about my carry permit and he naturally understood why I wouldn't want to leave it.
