When I drive around I tend to peer into cars and check out who's at the wheel. It's not an obsession, just a habit. But if I see a car with a vanity plate, I have an inescapable urge to figure out who has the plate "WHY 2K." Part of it is disgust that someone spent almost $150 to give you a 7 character saying and thus wondering what kind of person could be responsible for this atrocity. Then, I just become curious what kind of person has WHY 2K. What motivated them to spend this money? Why is this phrase so important to them? Is it important to them. I almost always end up baffled but amused.
If I ever get a vanity plate, it will read VANITY.

I've got a vanity plate. I don't take offense to what you've said, but I do disagree. I think the plates are silly, but so are subscriptions to Cosmo and fancy shoes and $50 concert tickets. In Arizona, the plates cost $25 per year. Considering the money I waste on truly meaningless expenditures, the small annual cost for personalizing my auto is a-ok.
What I find absurd are vanity plates that essentially reiterate what is already stated on the back of the car. Example: A Mercedes S 500 with a plate that reads "My Benz". No doubt, g-money. Or the Jeep Wrangler that says "1Jeep". Thanks, schmoe.
My two cents are spent, I suppose.

I am offended that you put your sisters birthday on your calendar but not your lovely roommates....

Point well taken Paul. I went a little overboard in the post, but my general opinion remains true. And offenders like the ones you noted are the very worst.
When I think about it in relation to subscriptions to Cosmo and Maxim, I definitely agree with you.

I'm sure VANITY is already taken, but maybe IRONY isn't, Mr. Tech TV. hehehe. Tomato, tomahto. Vanity plates, electronic toys. We all have our different urges to splurges, yes?

Funny I came across this web site...I'm purchasing a new car and want vanity plates but ain't sure what. Nothing wrong with it-you name your dog don't you? What's wrong with being "different" and personalizing what's yours and what you're proud of. I think it's a great option.
