i like to be with people, but i dislike relationships because of getting my heart broken so many times before. i write poetry and songs about my feeling and i cry when i read them. my friends call me Emo but i'm not sure if i am or not. i wear tight pants, converse, black somewhat long hair, and usually have a vintage tee shirt covered by my small denim jacket. do i sound emo?? please help!!

How old are you? cos in my weak opinion i dont reckon you find out whether your emo or not until you like through the tennage angst years 13-17. You sound pretty emo as your are an emotional person judgin by you cryin to Lyrics you have wrote. Have you ever won a fight? Would you rather 'score' than talk to a girl in your arms all night long. Every thing makes more sense by the day, Please email me tell me how you get on

hi, my name is chris and i'm lead singer of a band called saves the day, i'm from jersey and i saw your link while searchin for a definition of EMO.
well, emotionally-charged songs can surely make you cry, but only if you let them. your memories and sad situations make you EMO, emo is not what you wear, how long is your hair or how tight are your pants.... emo is how YOU feel in sad situations. am i right???? Go support us ... we're on tour with Taking Back Sunday and Brand new... we'll be on your town soon.

Yea... I dunno if i'm emo, but i always wear black, i have like, long bangs in the front and short spikey hair at the back, and I wear thick black glasses just cause i think they look cool... i have my eyebrow and nose pierced and I'm stretching my earlobes.. i'm a fairly unhappy person most of the time... i constantly listen to music and whatver... I don't have a boyfriend and don't want one cause i'm afraid he'll break up with me even tho i really love him. this has been me for a while and I didn't know what i was, punk, gothic, a freak whatever, but the other day my friend said i had an emo haircut and i was like what the fuck, so i came on the net to find out what the hell that is and i was like.. woa. That sounds like me.. and it made me someone satisfied to actualy BE something.. not just that weirdo you know? So.. i still dunno if thats what i am oor not, so if i am, could you tell me? sorry thisa is so long...

well i am thinking i def. dont even know what emo is anymore. its funny how i used to know what emo is and now i dont know what it is i just am...i think. its debatable. any way...sometimes being emo isnt just about how you dress. EMOtional. think about it....if you are crippled by your heavy or even broken heart chances are you just might be emo. i really dont like the tittle emo very much because it is just too broad basically any one who can feel is able to say they are emo and get away with it.
i really think i am going to shut up now because quite honestly i am not making very much sense and starting to just ramble on about nothing... visit me at my journal thinger if you want more emo-related talk www.blurty.com./~seaofbitterness

Hmm. . .Well i really don't know what I am.Lets see, I'm a teenager, "one of the smart weird people",and I don't have a boyfriend eitehr, not cuase i don't want one but (like some one else said) i'm scared to get hurt. I don't really look emo. I have brown long brown hair and no glasses, which people say you need to "really" be emo. Half of the tiem I basically dress normally but. .nut lots of sweaters and vintage stuff, but i also wera crazy outfits or make "statements" sometimes. I'm not usually sadbut when ever i think too hard about certain things I get really sad and very depressed. I play the guitar and write songs/ poetry. I also listen to emo music alot. . .or the kind of music that half of the people say is emo and the otehr half says no, they are just wanna be's or whatever. But tehy are way too sad and what not to not be emo, I think they are really touching though and i can relate to them.
Anyway I'm writting this but I guess there's no point. Oh the joys of boredom.

Emo is a music style, not a dress-style or personality. Emo bands are like Funeral for a friend, Finch, Hiding with girls and Brand New. Their songs are usually about girls dumping or rejecting them, and have emotional lyrics, for example: "To be the last one, who will sing you to sleep." This is viewed as sappy and unmacho which leads to the integration of emo into rock based music. Emo is what it stands for, emotional. But don't worry. So what if its not macho. Machoism is just a cover for chauvinism. Also, you can, I suppose, attach a certain dress and hair style etc to it. The hair is usually long fringed, sort of just longer than normal at the back and longish at the sides, and usually the top hair grows down and over the bottom hair making it fairly straight. For examples see the singers to Finch and Funeral for a Friend. Emo rocks!

well, if you ask me, Emo, isn't how you dress. Just like being punk, clothes don't label someone, their personality does. Do you like Emo music? Otherwise, tons of people dress like that, girls at school dress like that but they listen to Justin Timberlake and act muy prissy. So I guess it just depends on your personality.

sorry i dont want to come off bitchy or anything but i dont think finch and brand new arent true emo. come to think about it nothing is emo any more. its to commercial and the word is widely used.i know i know yea emo means emotion and by me saying they arent true emo thats judgemental blah blah but really i dont think they are.
nuh i ran across a site the other day and it was an article from some teen magazine about how to be emo. the article was all about the way to dress. sad really it is. every one asociates the label with how you dress. (i.e oh that sweater and those mary-janes look so emo toghether...yuck)
i say abandon the emo thing, publicity killed it. now adays anything and everything is emo. who the hells knows. is it personality, music, what? *shrugs* you've got me there. i dont really think about it that much, it makes it too hard when you think.
yet again i dont make sense. all i am going to say is you can walk around thinking your emo all you want because the way you feel or think, but you cant be emo if you dont listen to it. meaning the real stuff not this new breed of highly abnoxious attractive teens whinning about everything and things they know nothing of while killing their acoustics. i say we slay that music

Isn't all music emotional? Honestly, I hear more emotion in Chopin than that indie or pop-punk garbage that passes as music these days. I think the clothes make you any more "emo" than reciting the nonsensical and oftentimes downright retarded mushy lyrics current un-rock bands are crooning about. As far as personality is concerned, I don't think being a pushover wuss is something to pride yourself on, especially males. There's a happy medium there. As for music, I suggest anyone with an interest in "emotional" music to ditch the wusscore screamy idiocy for all of 10 minutes and listen to a pianist.

Hey well my names joyeileen, and Idk, I think im emo, its not like I label myself or anything.. But anyway, you all talk about how personalty links into being emo, well everyone that I go to school with suck.. they really bug me about my glasses, or my "sad depressing music".. one kid told me to "shut up, sit down and cry.." Now I know that not all "emo" kids are treated like this, maybe its just me, but the reason Im so depressed, Is because my friends can't accept me for who I really am...And pianists arent my type of music,.. oh man CHRIS you kick ass, SAVES the day rocks my socks, Chris you are god. Anyho..You cant label brand new or finch anything. You cant honestly label any band anything. What brand news lyrics are, is what they are.. no matter if theyre emo or sometimes Pussy rock.. you shouldnt be able to say anything about them, because theyre that persons emotions put into a musical form( for example,70x7) and thats the way they deal with it. so if your talkingabout if brand news emo.. obviously you dont know or respect music, if your going to insult any band like that. And being not-macho isnt being emo.. Macho is something that is so sterotypical- Hope all you people take pride in being sterotypical. Honestly, chris from saves the day has got it right, he knows what hes talking about.. its situations that make you sad.. that make you WHO you are. not some band that you listen too just to be kickass, or the brand of jeans you wear... emo's a state of being, not a clothing brand.
ps. I did see chris on tour with tbs, and you kicked ass nucca!!!

Its good to like something and to feel like you belong, kids...but emo is a trend. Everyone at my school has "emo" this and "emo" that and all they can talk about is dashboard confessional.
be cool and be yourselves.

"that *preppy* chick"

04/21/04 7:08 PM
you know what everyones fucking problem is? i hate kids at school. i hate everyone. i hate their stupid obsession. their obsession, you ask? Music. Who cares what the fuck you look like. Who cares what people say. Its just fucking music. Lyrics. Things that arent even real. Listen to your shit, and lay off other people. whatever someone considers "emo", they its emo. There arent any rules as to how to be emo, or how to dress, or whatever. Be yourself bitches. Believe me, it'll get you far. **once there was a girl and she liked a boy. The boy liked her back, and she got scared. Fear changes everything**.

everyone who posted here should take a look back at their posts and realize how ridiculous you sound.
i think it's funny that most people have forgotten that "emo" is not fashion but music.
and emo is any kind of emotionally charged music.
it does not limit itself to subgenres of the punk scene.
you are not doing anything new...you've been listening to emo for ages, and it was on the radio, and in classical music, and in country music....
i'm sorry...i hate when people say there is no right or wrong answer to what emo is.
there is a right answer.
emo is a GENRE OF MUSIC....just cuz you have dark rimmed glasses and a fucking porcupine haircut doesn't mean you're emo...no one is emo...MUSIC IS EMO....
uh get over yourselves.
sorry brother matt, these comments are bothering me.
